An explosion caused by an underground electrical fault has caused severe damage to a pavement in Wimbledon.
The blast occurred at around last night 7pm last night on the corner of York Road, Wimbledon.
The damage was first thought to be caused by a gas explosion by police at the scene.
UK Power Networks is currently investigating the cause of the explosion, which it said won’t be known for a while and could be due to a range of reasons.
Nobody was injured as a result of the fault.
The surrounding area also encountered a brief power outage which was fixed by 7.05pm.
Haydon’s Road and the surrounding areas were closed off by police until around 10pm while safety checks were carried out by utility companies.
SGN, a gas distribution company that covers Merton, visited the site and carried out checks but no gas readings were found.
Crews from SGN were at York Road from around 8.30pm until midnight.
UK Power Networks is currently investigating the cause of the explosion, which it said won’t be known for a while and could be because of a range of reasons.
A spokesperson for UK Power Networks said: “Our engineers quickly restored power supplies in part of Wimbledon yesterday, which were briefly interrupted by a fault on the underground electricity network.
“The incident happened 7.00pm and all affected customers had their power back on by 7.05pm.
“We apologise for any disruption and inconvenience caused.”
