THE head of a campaign group is calling for road improvements after a crash which killed a motorcyclist.

An ambulance crew and air ambulance were called to the accident in Westerham Hill, Biggin Hill, but the motorcyclist, a man in his 40s, died at the scene.

He was on a black Honda, thought to be a three-wheeled "trike bike", when he crashed into a lamppost at about 9am on July 1.

Bromley Borough Roads Action Group chairman Roger Lawson said: "It is a very dangerous stretch of road.

"You come out of Biggin Hill and you suddenly go over this steep hill without expecting it.

"There are blind junctions and the sight lines are not good.

"The council needs to look at the layout of the road."

Mr Lawson thinks work should be done to widen the road and reduce the blind junctions so drivers can see when another vehicle is approaching.

He also believes moving the lampposts back away from the edge of the road could help.

Mr Lawson said: "There have been a number of road accidents in Bromley where motorists have got into a skid and gone into a lamppost.

"Could the lamppost just be set back a bit more?"

This is the second fatal motorbike accident in the area within the past eight months.

On November 26 last year, James Gorman, 58, died at the junction of Saltbox Hill and Oaklands Lane, Biggin Hill.

The incident occurred when his motorbike collided with a Peugeot 206 at 2.20pm.

Mr Gorman died at the scene.

The driver and passenger in the Peugeot did not suffer any serious injuries.

Speaking about the recent incident, head of Bromley Council's road safety unit John Walton said: "The police have said it will be several weeks before they know how the accident happened and until they have reached conclusions we cannot make any decisions."

Witnesses to the Westerham Hill incident should call investigating officer Sergeant Robin Merrett on 020 8285 1574.
