Police have issued pop superstar George Michael with a caution for being caught with cannabis following his arrest in London last month.

Michael was arrested after being found slumped in his car at one of the West End's busiest crossroads .

A passer-by spotted the semi-conscious singer parked at an odd angle near the Hyde Park corner roundabout at 01.50am on Sunday. He was so worried that he called 999.

After paramedic ensured the 42-year-old millionaire had no serious injuries, police officers breathalysed and searched him.

Michael, of Hampstead, north London, was arrested on suspicion of possessing Class C drugs and driving while unfit.

But he was de-arrested for the driving offence after a police doctor examined him, concluding that he was fit.

With his school friend Andrew Ridgeley in the pop duo Wham!, Michael recorded decade-defining 1980s hits such as Wake Me Up Before You Go Go, Freedom and I'm Your Man. His first solo album, Faith, sold more than 10 million copies.

A long legal battle with his record label, Sony, prevented Michael from recording music for much of the 1990s. The tussle ended when Virgin and Dreamworks paid Sony $40 million to release him from the deal.

In 1998 Michael was arrested in Los Angeles for exposing himself to an undercover police officer in a public toilet. The scandal prompted him to admit he was gay.

Despite the low points, Michael remains one of the UK's most successful artists, selling more than 85 million records world wide.
