The much-hyped ABQ London pop-up cocktail bar inspired by Breaking Bad opens tonight for its (almost sold-out) initial three-month run.
I was one of the first lucky few to see its secrets at a press launch event, Let me show you around to give you a taste of what to expect ...
First things first, the bar really is in inside an RV and you really do get to cook your cocktails as advertised.
On entering ABQ’s residence in Hackney Wick, east London, you walk down an alleyway, turn a corner and there it is – the big American ‘recreational vehicle’ that looks very much like Walt and Jesse’s mobile meth lab that featured so famously in the early stages of the TV show.
The similarities don’t end there, as once inside it’s clear effort has been put in to creating an authentic setting.
Along the RV’s worktops are bottles of various liquids and numerous other ingredients used during the cooking process of making drinks. There are also bits of equipment that will look familiar from the show and bring back memories of school chemistry lessons, including test tubes, beakers, funnels, flasks and Petrie dishes.
There’s even an illuminated Walter White staring ominously from one of the walls.
Parties of around 20 people go into the bar at a time one and split off into groups to make different cocktails. Within each group, people are paired up to look after the different stages of production.
Along the way the assortment of ingredients are used to make the required powders and mixtures for the drink. Handily, there are instructions on the wall and everything is pre-measured so duffers like me who were useless at science at school don’t have to worry about doing anything technical. Yellow boiler suit-wearing staff are on hand to make sure it all goes smoothly.
Everything then comes together at the end in a very sciency-looking way (the cooking part) and then everyone gets to share the finished drink.
The one I got involved in is called a Blue Flynn (named after the alter ego of Walt’s son). My task was to create a slightly nasty smelling blue liquid.
Fortunately its aroma, and colour, changed as it became one of the components in a delicious strawberry rum punch served in a beaker on a tray with a couple of white lines (sherbet) for decoration.
Creating the cocktail was an odd experience, feeling a bit like being in the show and a bit like being back in the classroom, but it was also a lot of fun. It's great to see the cool concept of bringing a cult show like Breaking Bad off the screen and into an entertainment setting has been executed so well.
Once made, the cocktails can be enjoyed in a nice outdoor area where’s there another ‘regular’ bar serving less unusual drinks.
There’s a snack stand with all things blue inspired by the colour of the product Walt and Jesse make on the show. I took away this little souvenir – don’t worry, I haven’t broken bad myself, it’s just sugar (though I didn’t get it out on the train home for fear of arrest).
I even got to meet the main man who knocks, Heisenberg.
OK, so it’s really good impersonator who’ll be there on some of the nights for photo opportunities.
ABQ London (the named referring to the US city of Albuquerque where Breaking Bad was based) is open for the next three months, but has already sold out for July and August and only has limited availability for September and October so you’ll need to be quick if you want the chance to go along for this run.
If you do miss out this time, don't be surprised to see the bar's stay extended due to the demand or another ABQ London popping up somewhere else.
Tickets cost £30 for a two-hour session. See abqlondon.com
