(Stax) ****
A Thomas's 1967 album was ripe for re-release and the 50th anniversary of Stax has brought about the blessed day.
More refined than the same year's album of duets with Otis, Carla waltzes superb vocals over the Stax house band at arguably their most uptown.
There are plenty of trademark 6:8 ballads with Steve Cropper's guitar trading licks with Booker T's organ, and Carla's voice never sounded sweeter, but there's grit as well - check Something Good or Stop Thief; while the Latin-flecked I Take It To My Baby offers a more joyous lyrical soap opera than most of these tales of woe.
The set is augmented by four previously unissued tunes of which the infectious Same Thing and the soul deep heartache of Me & My Clock should be genre standards.
