(Warner Bros) **
FOUNDED by Nevermind producer Butch Vig and fronted by proto-emo poster girl Shirley Manson, Garbage came and went fairly swiftly having exhausted their blend of glossy rock melody, layers of grungey noise and fashionably suggestive lyrical darkness.
This compilation sticks to a chronological tracklisting which serves only to establish that Garbage delivered their best material early in their four-album career.
Only Happy When it Rains with its fuzzy bassline and poor-me words still stands up, as do the techno-rock fusion of Vow and Milk, while Stupid Girl could probably muster a dancefloor quorum at the indie disco.
Their Bond theme - The World is Not Enough - is still dreck though, and Bleed Like Me is a risible mess.
