New coronavirus infections leapt up in Wandsworth according to the latest batch of data published by Public Health England (PHE).

The south London borough reported 207 new cases of Covid-19 in the week up to June 3 according to PHE.

That was a sharp rise of 136 or 191.5 per cent on the previous week's figure.

It meant that Wandsworth had a 'rolling rate' of new infections per 100,000 people of 62.8, significantly higher than the current UK average of 45.8.

Wandsworth previously saw success in controlling an earlier outbreak of a Covid variant of concern first identified in South Africa, though the current 'Delta' strain of coronavirus now thought to be dominant in the UK is believed to be even more infectious and therefore easier to contract.

Other south London boroughs meanwhile reported similarly high infection rates.

For example in neighbouring Lambeth, the infection rate stood even higher at 75.5, with 207 new cases recorded in the week up to June 3, a rise of 37.4 per cent on the previous figure.

And in Merton the infection rate was 46, with 95 new cases (up 43.9 per cent) recorded over the time period.
