The regeneration of a post-war housing estate in Catford is entering its next phase, following the completion of 57 homes.
The Excalibur Estate’s 186 prefabricated, post-war bungalows are being replaced with 371 new homes by Lewisham Council in partnership with L&Q.
Phases One and Two of the development are complete, with work beginning on Phase Three to deliver 102 properties, 36 of which will be social homes.
Cllr Paul Bell, Cabinet Member for Housing and Planning, Lewisham Council, said: “I am very pleased to see work begin on this project as we continue taking action to tackle the housing crisis.
“The 36 new social homes currently under construction will make a transformative difference to the lives of Lewisham families and help increase the number of social homes in the borough.”
The new homes are due to be completed by the end of 2023.
Conservationists previously fought to save the estate from demolition, claiming the estate is a unique surviving example of twentieth-century architecture.
Lewisham Council pushed back against the idea, maintaining that it would be "virtually impossible to bring them up to modern standards, a view shared by a number of residents, who are mainly council tenants."
Around 10,000 households are on the council’s housing waiting list.
