Energetic pupils have taken part in a sponsored cyclothon in aid of a Barnet children's hospice to mark the end of the school year.

The schoolchildren at Edge Grove in Aldenham, Hertfordshire, have raised more than £4,000 for Noah's Ark, with hundreds of miles of cycling clocked up.

The older pupils cycled on Schwinn bikes in the gym which were loaned to the school by Radlett-based Cycle Society, Radlett with support from Steve Jones and his team of instructors.

Those who felt unsteady on moving bikes were able to use a special static bike, so they didn’t miss out.

Throughout the day, each year group arrived at the school sports hall to get on their bikes and clock up as many miles as possible in their allotted time.

The aim was to reach 1,000km as a school, but the pupils had smashed that target by lunchtime and managed to double the target reaching 2,000km by the end of the day.

Lisa McDonald, head teacher at Edge Grove School, said: "We are super proud of our cycling stars. Special thanks goes to Friends of Edge Grove cyclists Mr Sarosi and Mr Wilkie for cycling with the children and to the parent helpers for logging the laps and for spurring the children on.

"It has been a fantastic end to the school year, to see our children and staff getting involved, having fun and raising money for a wonderful cause. It goes to show what a difference we can all make when we work together."

Children from year groups 3 to 8 took part along with teachers.

Edge Grove has now raised more than £10,000 for Noah's Ark Children's Hospice after a sponsored Welly Walk earlier this year raised £6,000.
