The winner of an open competition to redesign a section of the riverside area of Kingston has been unveiled.
Weston Rengifo Architectural Practice (WR-AP) and Kingston Academy’s entry was dubbed the winner after it was judged to have "created a vibrant scene at the riverside around John Lewis and Kingston Bridge".
The project to rejuvenate Kingston Riverside was launched after a joint petition from the council (RBK), Kingston First, Kingston University and the Creative Youth charity secured £200,000 in funding from the Mayor of London's Getting Building Fund that was created for public realm improvements.
Since then a review of "many fantastic entries" ultimately led to the WR-AP - Kingston Academy plan getting the greenlight to take the plans forward.
Director of Weston Rengifo Architectural Practice (WR-AP) Sean Weston said he and his team were "delighted" with the news:
"We’re delighted to be assisting with the rejuvenation of this prime riverside area. Our submission brought together the ideas of our practice and students from the Kingston Academy to envisage a new public space that is vibrant, welcoming and safe. Focused around stimulating the senses of visitors, the proposals look to improve the areas biodiversity, connectivity and usage with a number of interventions. We look forward to working alongside the project stakeholders in developing the concepts into reality."

Further details of the plans were not forthcoming on Friday (August 13) when the news was announced by RBK said they would update Kingston on the proposals "soon" via the Let's Talk portal.
There are hopes that the project will improve the popular social area of Kingston that has been hit by ASB issues such as littering in recent years.
Speaking previously on the prospect of Chair of Creative Youth Robin Hutchinson said:
"This is a real opportunity to provide a visual progression to and from the green spaces of Canbury Gardens and the town centre riverside. It can become an attractive and engaging public space for enjoyment, activity and relaxation, making the most of its location next to the Thames. It can bring energy and animation next to the Bridge and draw together what will be the new Factory of Futures and the town centre."
