Work to create a “pedestrian and cycle zone” on a Deptford Street, closing it partially to traffic and parking, is complete.
Restrictions are now in place between the MOT centre and café on Rolt Street, next to Folkestone Gardens, which was formerly described as a “rat run”.
The road has been narrowed using footway 'build outs', and signage notifying drivers of the restrictions, which will be enforced using automatic number plate recognition cameras, has been erected.
A council spokesperson said: “Inevitably some journeys may take longer but we also anticipate that some of our residents will make those journeys in the future, where possible, by more sustainable and active modes of travel such as walking, cycling or by public transport.”
We’re determined to build a greener Lewisham 💪💚 so we’ve created a safer space for pedestrians and cyclists on Rolt Street in #Deptford 🚴

Emergency vehicles will still be able to access the route.
Chair of DeptfordFolk, Trina Lynskey, previously said Rolt Street was “just a carpark" and a "rat run", leading a campaign for its closure.
The street borders a small playground and skatepark in Folkestone Gardens, a small urban park created in the 1970s.
The changes are part of a wider programme resulting from a consultation on the Deptford Liveable Neighbourhoods Project in 2019.

Comments on proposals for five locations in Deptford were invited.
A reduction in TfL funding resulting from the pandemic meant the council was unable to proceed with the scheme as originally consulted upon.
A reduced budget has been made available however, allowing modified proposals to be implemented this summer.
The changes will be in place for a initial period of up to 18 months, during which the council will monitor their impact and seek feedback.
Other proposals include re-surfacing the main pedestrian and cycle path between Rolt Street and Edward Street, which became damaged by tree roots.
Trial closures on Scawen Road and Prince Street, outside The Dog and Bell, could also be made permanent.
