A vigil has been held to mark to the passing of Ukrainian family-man Vitali Skrypniak who was stabbed to death outside Belvedere Station in September.
Police, an MP and dozens of people from the area attended despite a deluge of rain on Saturday, October 2, as the community honoured a man killed in "horrendous circumstances, right on their doorstep."
Many brought floral tributes and tealights were placed around flowers at the railway station where Vitali was killed.
The 45-year-old was found injured by a single stab wound outside the south east London station on September 18, and he died shortly after at the scene.
Vitali had only arrived in the UK the month prior, working to transport goods for a a logistics company amid lorry driver shortages, and leaves behind a wife and toddler back in Ukraine.
Councillor Dave Putson, who has lived in Belvedere since 1980, helped organised the occasion after the local community were left shocked by the news.
Cllr Putson said: "It was really quite quite a nice tribute to a man I guess most of us never knew, but who came to help us all as a HGV driver.
"Belvedere is usually a peaceable place, and this is a huge tragedy for this family."
He said around 50 people came to the vigil, despite downpour, including local MP Abena Oppong Asare.
The Met Police's Borough Commander, security guards from Network Rail and a representative from the Ukrainian Embassy attended the touching event as the community reflected on the recent violence.
One of the women who attended was there on the night of the murder, and had tried to save Vitali's life by giving him CPR.
"The community did a really thoughtful job of making it look really really respectful and nice," said Dave, who gave a speech to officially mark the event, although the event was also open for the public to speak.
Several community members spoke about the tragedy, including those who had lived in the area for many years, "their way of absolutely stating and showing solidarity in that they were opposed to violence."
Cllr Putson said videos and photos had been compiled to send to man's family, and that he was currently drying out the book of condolences.
Nuxley Road Florists provided decoration, and actually provided a much bigger floral display than the community fundraising had paid for, and they took the time and trouble to ensure they were in the colours of the Ukrainian flag.
Belvedere Police also attended the vigil on Saturday, with officers attending Station Road to mark their respects for Vitali.
The police force said they were happy to attend following the horrific murder, and said it was "nice to see solidarity with the Belvedere residents."
