It is a drive of around 30 minutes from London (subject to your location and traffic conditions) which is perfect for a relaxing weekend getaway!
The crystals are made of the minerals gypsum, calcite, fluorite and stalactites. As you progress through the tunnel and enter the main chamber, we see that it’s adorned with amethyst, quartz and historical coral.
In the late 1940s, the roof was removed and subsequently, the ceiling collapsed. It was not until the late 1990s when the initial restoration began but wasn’t completed until very recently in 2013 (however, with the exception of the residual wires in one of the images). Moreover, the water system was kept the same as when it was built between 1738 till 1773 to preserve its authenticity.
In addition to the historical beauty of this place, it was used as a filming site for many movies and Netflix series. Some of these movies were Suffragettes (2015), 101 Dalmatians and the blockbuster series Bridgerton and Black Mirror. The place was also used by Ellie Goulding for her music video Starry-Eyed.
It’s open seven days a week; weekdays’ opening times are from 10 am to 6 pm and the weekends’ opening times are from 11 am to 3 pm. It costs £9.90 for adults, £5.50 for children and under 5s go free!
