An eight-year-old boy has written a poignant poem to mark this year’s Remembrance Sunday.

The national opportunity to remember the service and sacrifice of all those that have defended our freedoms falls on Sunday, November 14 this year.

Lucian Simpson, of Redbridge, has played tribute to “men and women that fell in battle” in his poem titled ‘Poppy, poppy rising from the ashes of a fiery battlefield.’

The Aldersbrook Primary School pupil has used similes and repetition in his work and has drawn a poppy alongside his poem.

It focuses mainly on the symbolism of the poppy which has been a prominent symbol of remembrance for almost a century.

The poem reads:

Poppy, poppy

Rising from the ashes of a fiery battlefield

Worn as a badge of honour not just a plastic ornament

A souvenir of bravery

Poppy, poppy

Worn by the men and women that fell in battle

I'm not a conflict or a war, I'm much more

The world needs to grow in peace not war

The earth is like a mother where things grow and die

Poppy, poppy

the people that passed away we need to respect and honour

I thank the people that helped our land and freedom and served for our countries

Poppy, poppy
