After a long wait the second instalment of the Caves and Cliffs update for Minecraft has finally arrived. After the first half of the update (released on June 8th) introduced many incomplete or unobtainable features such as goats, amethysts and axolotls, part two looks to finish two at was announced back in 2019.
The upgdate brings an overhaul to the terrain generation of certain biomes, specifically mountains (as one could guess from its name) which now come in 6 different variants, and caves. To accommodate these changes the developers had to change the world height and depth, from a previous 0-256 to a range of -64-320, bringing almost 120 more blocks to a world's altitude.
Additionally the update is bringing in Amethyst Geodes and Lush caves in which the previously unaccesible through survival features of the amethyst crystals and axolotls respectively will be obtainable.
The Deep Dark, a feature also announced for the Caves and Cliffs update has since been delayed for next years big update, the Wild Update, which pledges to update the exploration aspect of the game (and add frogs more importantly). Another feature teased last year, archaeology, has not been included, and has not been addressed since, similarly to the fletching table which - whilst accessible in game - has no mechanics.
The Caves and Cliffs update has been available to play for anyone with a copy of Minecraft since 5pm on the 30 of November, finally putting the "mine" back into Minecraft.
