Trafalgar Squares New Year's Eve celebration has been cancelled as Omircron cases surge throughout the capital.

The festive event was set to welcome over 6,500 key workers and members of the public. 

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said the event had to be cancelled because "we must take the right steps to reduce the spread of the virus."

The Mayor announced a major incident in London on Saturday after 65,525 new confirmed cases of Covid were found.

The rise in cases has also seen a 29% increase in London hospital admissions during the last week. 

Those who were planning on attending the event are now being asked to watch a live TV broadcast on BBC One or BBC iPlayer, where viewers can watch highlights from 2021. 

The cancellation makes London the latest major city in the world to cancel their New Years' celebrations as Omicron cases rise. 

Following the cancellation, Mayor Khan wanted to assure the public that although disappointing for many "we must take the right steps to reduce the spread of the virus".

He added: "I’m proud that we will still have an incredible broadcast spectacular to watch on our screens, which will showcase our great city to the rest of the world."
