On the 31st of October 2020, Kenton Recreation Grounds, Harrow, opened a new bike track.
Eugene Callinan BEM, the park manager said that in order to have the BMX track installed in the park he had to do a petition, in which he received 360 signatures in favour of the track and none against. As a result, it was built in Kenton Recreation Ground, whereas it was originally supposed to go to another park.
Over the last five years, Harrow has been going through a rejuvenation project, with an increase in the amount of flats and high-rise buildings being developed. Callinan stated that the track 'was needed for the wellbeing of the local people living in flats with no gardens.'
Drushita Shah, the project coordinator for the park commented on the impact that the track has had on the younger community. She states that it has increased the amount of people that come to the park, and they have had people travel from 'Kingston, Watford, Hertfordshire and Essex', just to use this track. It has 'created waves in the young community.' During lockdown many young people struggled with their mental health and this was their 'lifeline'.
As a result of the new track, Harrow Bike Club has also become a new addition to the local community. It runs on the weekends in the morning at the park. If you want to book a session with a profession trainer, Access sport currently manages this. For £4, you get free access to bike, safety equipment and training.
Jaroslav Hajdik from Slicks Skate Crew travelled from Willesden Green to use the track. He says that he loves the track because 'it is safe and the people are respectful.'
The new track has allowed many people from all over the UK to come and practice their skills, or develop new ones. It has been a life changing addition to the local community and will continue to encourage more people to go out and try new things.
