A new complex-needs service has opened in Borehamwood for those escaping homelessness and rough sleeping.
Shenwood Court will offer 24 previous rough sleepers in the community a pathway to independence with both specialist support and a safe comfortable place to call home.
Charity One YMCA has worked with Hertsmere Borough Council, Hertfordshire County Council and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities to provide this service.
Mark Turner, Director of Operations at One YMCA, said: “With so many awful things that have happened as a result of Covid over the past two years this is such an amazing result, and I am so proud and grateful to all of those involved in working together to deliver a service that really can help deliver an end to rough sleeping in the area.”
One YMCA says it has created a psychologically informed environment at Shenwood Court, bringing everything together in one place.
At all stages and for all residents the YMCA Borehamwood service is directly targeted to the needs of each individual to help them move through the pathway.
Councillor Jean Heywood, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Transport, added: “I'm so proud that Hertsmere Borough Council is a part of this project.
“This scheme builds on the work we, as a council, undertook before and during the pandemic to reach out to individuals who face an uncertain future and help support them into longer-term accommodation.
“I want to thank everyone who is working so hard to support the residents at YMCA Borehamwood and help them on these first steps of a difficult journey. This scheme is already making a difference to the lives of residents, which as we approach the festive season, is the best kind of gift that can be given.”
