The Harrow Civic Centre is set to be demolished and replaced by 1,000 'affordable' new homes.
The Harrow Civic Centre on Station Road was constructed in 1973 and will be demolished in its 49th year of existence. In 2014, Harrow Council announced that it was to move to a smaller building in Wealdstone as part of its regeneration strategy, a £60 million pound scheme in partnership with Wates Residential.
Some council activity will continue out of the depot on Forward Drive.
In March 2019, the council announced that there would be delays, but it seems that the council is set to move in Autumn of this year (2022).
It seems that this is the right time for a move as Hybrid working schemes have meant that there is much less activity in the offices as pre-pandemic, and many are working from home, so it makes sense for a smaller building.
But there has been a lot of differing views on the plan. Harrow is a major Labour seat, being held by Labour since 1997. The Labour Party supports the project and are firm that this will not cost the taxpayer and will benefit the borough.
On the other hand, The Conservative Party have criticised its delayers and are concerned that residents will not get value for their money.
In conclusion, this is not a firm plan, as the council’s cabinet, who have agreed to this plan, could be subject to review, and the plan may not go ahead at all.
