Are comics as much of a current concept as marvel and similar entertainment corporations deem them to be? Does comic con really profit from the comic or the convention?
Many of you may know comic con for its cosplay culture or maybe even the fan meet and greets. It may shock most of you to hear that although these aspects have become a major selling point for the event it was alot more comic based. The first ever San Diego Comic-Con took place in 1970. It was ran by Shel Dorf, Ken Krueger, and Richard Alf, who were just a couple of comic book enthusiasts. The event began as a 1 day mini event held in the U.S. Grant Hotel. This first of it’s kind, the convention brought in around 100 people for the day, an infinitely smaller number compared to the 130,000 people that attended in 2014.
The comics of the 1970s we often short and cheap but the writers back then would be sure to stuff them full with information and speech. This was an era where most of the popular superhero characters came out. A trend in the comic crazy world was batman and there was a general dc takover with wonder woman and superman also flying off shelves.
Many people have said that comic con is nerdy and claim to have no interest but proceed to watch marvel. It is however fair to say that those who do go to comic con are very devoted to the craft of being in a fandom.
Although it has faided the comic aspect is being kept alive through art and design worshops which teach participants how to design/write and or draw their own unique comic.
