Motorists in Epping Forest are facing disruption due to an extensive package of roadworks that will temporarily close some long stretches of road, starting as early as next week.

A notice from Essex County Council in this week’s edition of the Guardian details plans for the phased closure of roads in Epping, Chigwell and Loughton plus other restrictions including a temporary 30mph speed limit until the works are completed.

The closure order is due to take effect on Thursday, February 17 and will last for up to 18 months of whenever the works are completed.

The exact dates when the works will be carried out will be specified on the One.network website and the closures will be carried out in a phased manner and then reopened to the public.

The lengths of road due to be affected are:

  • B1393 High Road, Epping – from a point 50m south-west of its junction with Highfield Place for a distance of 2190m in a south-westerly direction. Alternative route: B1393, B181, A414, High Street, Coopersale Street, Stanford River Road, A113, B172, B1393 and vice-versa.
  • Theydon Road, Epping – from its junction with High Road for a distance of 276m in a south-easterly then south-westerly direction. Alternative route: Theydon Road, B172, B1393 and vice versa.
  • Bury Lane, Epping – from its junction with High Road for a distance of 60m in a north-westerly direction. Alternative route: Crown Hill, Horseshoe Hill, Upshire Road, Parklands, Crooked Mile, Sewardstone Road, Dowding Way, Honey Lane, High Road and vie versa.
  • Hainault Road, Chigwell – from its junction with Manor Road to its junction with Station Road, a distance of 865m. Alternative route: Hainault Road, High Road, Chigwell Road, A133, Woodford Avenue, Cranbrook Road, Fencepiece Road and vice versa.
  • Fencepiece Road, Chigwell – from its junction with Manor Road to its junction with Tudor Crescent, a distance of 470m. Alternative route: Hainault Road, High Road, Chigwell Road, A133, Woodford Avenue, Fencepiece Road and vice versa.
  • Manor Road (side road), Chigwell – from its junction with Hainault Road to its end, a distance of 89m. Alternative route: None available.
  • Manor Road, Chigwell – from its junction with St Winifreds Close for a distance of 165m in a south-westerly direction. Alternative route one: Gravel Lane, Abridge Road, High Road, Chigwell Road, A1400, A12, A1112 and vie versa. Alternative route two: Gravel Lane, Abridge Road, High Road, Chigwell Road, A1400, A123, Fencepiece Road and vice versa.
  • A113 Abridge Road, Chigwell – from its junction with Chigwell Lane for a distance of 925m in a north-easterly direction. Alternative route: A113, Coopers Hill, High Street, A414, A1025, A1019, A414, A10, A121, A1168 and vice versa. Diversion for Pudding Lane: A1112 Gravel Lane and vice versa.
  • A113 High Road, Chigwell – from its junction with Bramble Close for 105m northbound. Alternative route: A113, A1168, A121, A104, A1009, A113 and vice versa.
  • A1168 Rectory Lane (including Rectory Lane Service Road, Loughton) – from the junction with Goldings Hill to the junction with Borders Lane, a distance of 1395m. Alternative route: A121, A104, A1009, A113, A1168 and vice versa.
