In the heart of London, a lively studio is bustling with sounds of music and occupied by a group of young talented female musicians, who are preparing for their performance on Friday 18th March at 7:00pm at Poplar Union. They will be singing and/or rapping original songs as part of the ‘Women In Focus Festival’ in celebration for International Women’s Day. You are invited to this performance that should not be missed.

The music programme is led by a group of female youth workers at Spotlight and assisted by Skye Francis, who is also a young musician. The ‘Women In Focus Festival’ will allow the young people to perform their original songs, and is designed to empower young women and give them a safe space to freely express themselves through the art of music, so often dominated by men.

Skye Francis commented, “I think it’s important to provide a safe space for young women to develop their skills as well as their artist profile. Since the industry is heavily male dominated, I am pleased to provide that along with Spotlight staff, so that we can be more independent as female artists.”

Growth and confidence is one of the main aims of this programme, in which Leyla, one of the youth workers, notes “We are only half way through this process and already, I’ve witnessed magic from all the girls.”

Enjoying an abundance of music styles and genres, means that this is not something the group lacks. Youth worker Beth Hayden describes  “lots of genres, from drill to soul!” The young musicians are also keen on experimenting and combining different styles to create their own unique sounds. For example, Skye Francis said that “[I’m] Inspired by a variety of genres such as: Jazz, RnB, NeoSoul.” Another participant, Diamond also said “I'm always experimenting on different genres and beats and I'm always just having fun when I'm in a musical environment.”

Both the youth workers and young people strongly communicated that the performance is one that shouldn’t be missed. Vivian Mallam, a young person, said “I would say not to miss my performance because it will be a night to be inspired and enjoy.” Gabby Seer, another musician said “The song performing is the first song that I feel overly happy about”.

And Lastly, Amelia Wornell said “You would be slipping to miss it. Don’t Slip.”
