The last day of the month February marks the beginning of Warner House’s Charity Week at Woodford County.

House Charity Week refers to the allocated week each one of the four houses (Warner, Repton, Highams and Newton) at Woodford are given during the year to fundraise for a charity of their choice. There are many ways to do so; some past examples include: bazaars, bake sales, teacher vs student events and more.

Warner house was named after Edward Warner who bought the schools main building in 1849 as a reflection of his high status and later sold it to Essex County Council in 1922, 3 years after it had become Woodford County High School for Girls.

More than 100 years later and Warner House begins its charity week by hosting a sports event – a students vs. teachers netball match! Proved to be popular and certainly entertaining in past years, the students versus teachers event will be an opportunity for a competitive spirit to spark between teachers and students in contrast to normal classroom lessons.

The event will be hosted on Tuesday 1st March to all years in the school during lunchtime and costs £1 to watch and all of the money will go to charity.

Prithikaa Thangarajan, a year 12 student and Warner House member said, ‘I’m quite excited to see the match because I think it’ll be really funny and entertaining to see the interactions between the teachers and students! And all the money goes to charity so we get entertainment whilst helping a good cause at the same time which is really nice.’

Warner’s House charity week not only provides fun and excitement for the Woodford community but also allows everyone to contribute towards donating to charity and thus embodying Woodford’s value of charity whilst simultaneously strengthening the school community, therefore house charity week is of great importance at WCHS.
