For the first time ever in the uk two baby Giant Galapagos have been bred in zoo!
A 70 year old male Galapagos tortoise called Dirk, who arrived in the uk all the way back in the 1960s, is now the father of two newborns in Oxfordshire alongside the mother named Charlie who is 21, which he bred with back in November.
These tortoises are very significant animals as were one of the first creatures that Darwin used to prove his theory of evolution which lead to great scientific advancements. They also have a long life span of 100 years and weigh 190kg, but for now the two newborns are only little.
The zoo in Oxfordshire is named ‘Crocodiles of the World’ incubated the eggs for almost two months and is not only home to the new family but also two females called Zuzu and Isabella. This birth is great news for the species and right now they are considered as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List, with only around 15,000 left.
So this means that these little ones are on route to change history as long as they keep munching on their monitored diet of dried grasses, leafy greens, pear cactus and weeds.
