Seven adorable ducklings have been rescued by firefighters from the roof of a three-storey building in Deptford.
London Fire Brigade was called to the building in Seagar Place at around 2.30pm on Saturday to find a duck had nested on the roof.
There was no way for the ducklings to get down on their own, so firefighters used one of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders to bring the ducklings down to ground level using a pet carrier.
Two fire engines from East Greenwich and Greenwich fire stations attended the scene and the birds were taken to safety by 3.20pm.
The ducklings are being looked after by a wildlife volunteer but will be moved to the Swan Sanctuary to later be released into the wild.
Volunteer wildlife rescuer Andy Miller said: “I want to send a huge, heartfelt, thank you to London Fire Brigade.
“The ducklings are safe at home with me now, but will be going to The Swan Sanctuary where they will be cared for until they are able to be released into the wild.”
London Fire Brigade said that it is ready, willing and able to assist distressed or injured animals.
However, the Brigade warned against people putting themselves at risk by trying to rescue an animal themselves and encourages people to call the RSPCA in the first instance.
Fire crews will assist if specialist equipment is required.
