The incident caused severe delays in both directions on the M11 in the Epping Forest district area, as well as on the A406 in north east London and through Woodford Green during rush hour.
The Metropolitan Police service for Redbridge tweeted: "Motorists are advised to avoid the M11 at the A12 Redbridge roundabout as closures are currently in place following a collision."
Most of the delays have now eased now that the rush hour is over although the motorway remains closed (as of 10am).
The diversion motorists are being asked to take is via Woodford Green and the Wake Arms Roundabout to join the M25 at junction 26.
