A historic 900-year-old archway has been unveiled in Merton in a special ceremony on Monday, July 25.
The wooden arch has remarkably survived from the ancient Merton Priory in Station Road.
The arch has been stored at Mitcham’s Wandle Industrial Museum for over 30 years and no one could see it, but now it will be on permanent display at Merton Priory Chapter house – just 200 yards from where it originally stood.
John Hawks, curator of the Chapter House, said: “We're thrilled to have it in the Chapter House - its like an old friend coming home.”
The ceremony was held by the Mayor of Merton, Councillor Joan Henry, and 25 people attended – including local Colliers Wood councillor Laxmi Attawar, Merton Council, and the Wandle Industrial Museum.
To see the archway in person, you can visit the Chapter House at Merton Abbey Mills by the underpass near Sainsbury’s car park.
This is open every Sunday until October from 11am to 4pm.
