PICTURES from the scene show a major road in Bexley closed off after a burst water pipe.
The incident happened between Vicarage Road and the A222 just after 2am today.
Thames Water said repairs have started and it is doing all it can to “get things back to normal.”
The water company has apologised to customers in the area who are experiencing no water or lower pressure than normal.
The road has also been closed in both directions.
Thames Water aims to complete the repairs by this evening and hopes to backfill and reinstate it over the weekend, according to Bexley Council.
Providing the materials cure in the hot weather, the road will reopen by August 15.
Diversions are in place for the 492 and B12 bus routes, according to AA traffic.
A spokesperson for Thames Water said: “We’re sorry to customers experiencing low pressure or no water today following a burst on Bexley High Street this morning.
“Our engineers were quickly on the scene and have started the repair.
“We realise how inconvenient this is, especially during such hot weather and we’re doing all we can to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.”
A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: "We were called at 2.04am to a ruptured water main on Bexley High Street and the incident was over for the brigade by 2.55am.
"One fire engine attended the scene."
