The Conservative MP for Orpington has said he is “delighted” by Liz Truss’ leadership win, as she is set to become the country’s new Prime Minister.
Gareth Bacon, Conservative MP for Orpington since December 2019, said that he believes that the country needs a new approach.
Liz Truss was named the new leader of the Conservative Party at around midday on Monday.
She garnered the most votes from Tory party members to beat rival Rishi Sunak in the contest to succeed Boris Johnson, as was widely expected.
Liz Truss promised a “bold plan” to cut taxes, deal with the energy crisis and deliver a Tory victory in 2024 as she prepares to take office as the country’s next prime minister.
She defeated rival Rishi Sunak by 81,326 votes to 60,399 to win the Tory leadership and will replace Boris Johnson in No 10 on Tuesday.
Ms Truss said Tory beliefs in freedom, low taxes and personal responsibility “resonate with the British people”.
“During this leadership campaign, I campaigned as a conservative and I will govern as a conservative,” she said.
“We need to show that we will deliver over the next two years.
“I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy.
“I will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with people’s energy bills but also dealing with the long-term issues we have on energy supply.”
Orpington MP Gareth Bacon said that she will “build on Boris Johnson's record of delivery and unleash our country's potential”.
In a statement about her victory, he highlighted the energy crisis and how he believes that scrapping green levies and maximising oil and gas will secure our energy supply.
This will be alongside Truss' goals of cutting taxes to “help people pay their bills and enable businesses to drive economic growth”.
He believes that Liz Truss will also take a focus on “supporting businesses, tackling crime and facing down militant trade unions” which will “deliver for Orpington”.
Gareth Bacon said: "I'm delighted that Liz Truss was elected Leader of the Conservative Party today.
“Rishi Sunak should be proud of his campaign and time in government, but I believe we need to take a new approach to cut taxes and grow our economy.
"With energy bills soaring, scrapping green levies and maximising North Sea oil and gas will lower bills and help secure our energy supply.
“But we must also cut taxes and red tape to help people pay their bills and enable businesses to drive economic growth.
"As Prime Minister, Liz Truss will build on Boris Johnson's record of delivery and unleash our country's potential.
“She will also deliver for Greater London, including Orpington and surrounding villages, by supporting businesses, tackling crime and facing down militant trade unions.
"Now is the time for the Conservative Party to unite and deliver.”
