Labour MPS for Lewisham Deptford and Lewisham East have raised concerns about how Liz Truss is going to tackle the ongoing cost of living crisis.
Janet Daby, Member of Parliament for Lewisham East, and Vicky Foxcroft, Member of Parliament for Lewisham Deptford, highlight similar points in statements about the newly announced Prime Minister.
Janet Daby said that we needed “real leadership” as we headed towards a “bleak winter” Vicky Foxcroft claims that “families are looking at their bills and wondering what to do”.
Both MPs say that Truss’ proposals are not as strong as labours energy plan which would “ensure no one would pay a penny more on their energy bill this winter, and fully fund it with a windfall tax on oil and gas companies”.
Liz Truss was named the new leader of the Conservative Party at around midday on Monday.
She garnered the most votes from Tory party members to beat rival Rishi Sunak in the contest to succeed Boris Johnson, as was widely expected.
Liz Truss promised a “bold plan” to cut taxes, deal with the energy crisis and deliver a Tory victory in 2024 as she prepares to take office as the country’s next prime minister.
She defeated rival Rishi Sunak by 81,326 votes to 60,399 to win the Tory leadership and will replace Boris Johnson in No 10 on Tuesday.
Ms Truss said Tory beliefs in freedom, low taxes and personal responsibility “resonate with the British people”.
“During this leadership campaign, I campaigned as a conservative and I will govern as a conservative,” she said.
“We need to show that we will deliver over the next two years.
“I will deliver a bold plan to cut taxes and grow our economy.
“I will deliver on the energy crisis, dealing with people’s energy bills but also dealing with the long-term issues we have on energy supply.”
Janet Daby, Member of Parliament for Lewisham East said: “Now that Liz Truss is Prime Minster, she must urgently tackle the cost-of-living crisis.
“The Conservatives have been in power for 12 long years.
“The economy is a mess, wages are low and inflation is high.
“I am seeing far too many local people struggling to make ends meet.
“Her offer is nothing like Labour’s energy plan that would see a windfall tax on oil and gas companies and offer meaningful help to struggling households.
“Labour’s plan would deliver real solutions to the cost-of-living crisis.
“I am also concerned that as an MP she voted for cruel austerity policies and as Foreign Secretary she has damaged our relations with the EU over proposed changes to the Northern Ireland Protocol.
“It is also unacceptable that she has served in a Government that has left Afghans, who fled the Taliban, forgotten in hostels.
“As we head towards a bleak winter we need real leadership, that governs for all and not just for the Tory party membership.”
Vicky Foxcroft, Member of Parliament for Lewisham Deptford said: “12 years of the Tories has produced nothing but low wages, high prices, and a Tory cost-of-living crisis.
“Liz Truss offers only more of the same ideas that got us in this mess.
“It’s clear that during this drawn out and predictable leadership campaign, the cost-of-living crisis, which will affect every household across the country, has been a total afterthought.
“Labour’s plan would ensure no one would pay a penny more on their energy bill this winter, and fully fund it with a windfall tax on oil and gas companies.
“I hope for the good of the country Liz Truss backs this plan, as families are looking at their bills and wondering what to do.”
