The hospital that nobody wanted (at the time).
Chingford Hospital was built in 1901 by Walthamstow Council as an isolation hospital for infectious diseases such as smallpox.
Chingford Urban District Council had no say over the hospital’s construction, and locals, worried about their health, objected to having a fever hospital in their midst.
One of the hospital buildings survives today as the Silverthorn Medical Centre.
