A letter of condolence was shared on behalf of Harrow to the Royal Family.

Harrow mayor Cllr Janet Mote addressed the private secretary of King Charles III to pay respects to Her Majesty.

Like councils across England, the letter was used as an opportunity to reflect on the national mourning period and how people within Harrow are feeling.

Cllr Mote said: “As we mourn our late monarch, we also remember the family at which she was the centre. I hope all those close to her can find solace in our late Queen’s exceptional life of service and the global outpouring of sadness and deep affection that her passing has heralded.”

To pay respects, the Union Flag outside the Civic Centre was flown at half mast before the proclamation was read on Sunday, September 11, at 2pm.

The proclamation was read out again just by Katy’s statue in the town centre at 3pm.

Cllr Paul Osborn, leader of Harrow Council, said: “Her Late Majesty represented us all, regardless of background or affiliation – she was a Queen for the whole world. She united us in admiration for her service and her steadfastness.

“The late Queen was someone whom we felt we knew and who represented a central continuity in all our lives.”

Tributes were pouring in from across the borough as books of condolences have been made available to sign at the Civic Centre, Harrow Arts Centre, Headstone Manor and Museum and libraries across Harrow.

Speaking on behalf of the opposition Labour party, Cllr David Perry also shared his tribute and said: “Our late Queen dedicated her life to this country in a way that is absolutely unprecedented.

“And balanced this commitment to public service with that of a loving family life. Our hearts go out to those closest to Her late Majesty at this sad time. We will miss her greatly.”

Several events and meetings have been postponed and move as a result, including all council meetings until September 20, Marlborough School Street meetings, Play in Wealdstone Square, the Harrow Means Business Event that will now be on October 13 and the Tag party event in Centenary park.
