Punters of The Wrong ‘Un Wetherspoons pub in Bexleyheath are already mourning the loss of their “memory-filled” local, dubbed by some as the “best in south London”.
The Wrong ‘Un on the Broadway is one of the five other JD Wetherspoons pubs that are being sold in south London.
It comes as Wetherspoons spokesman Eddie Gershon said that the closures were a “commercial decision”, and that the pubs will continue to operate as normal until they are sold.
He said: “We understand that customers and staff will be disappointed.”
Other Wetherspoons pubs closing in south London include Bankers Draft in Eltham, the Asparagus in Battersea, the Capitol in Forest Hill and the Foxley Hatch in Purley.
Bexley Council has said that it is “naturally disappointed” to hear about the closure, which they say was “entirely a commercial decision by Wetherspoons.”
The Wrong ‘Un has been described by fans of the pub as “friendly” and a place “packed with great memories”.
Whether the venue was used for quiet evening drinks, mealtimes with the family, or a pre-drinking session before a hard night clubbing – many will be sad to see it close Here’s what News Shopper readers said about the closure:
- 1. “I have been in this pub numerous times and always found the staff friendly.
- “What a loss this will be to the area.
- “As is the one closing in Eltham.”
- 2. “This was one of the best Wetherspoons in South London - the staff actually stayed there for more than a month unlike many of the others.”
- 3. “Being now 34 years old, I still remember (just) many nights spent here in my late teens and early twenties, usually before moving on to elsewhere!
- “I have finally reached the age where I feel sad to see a pub.”
- “Going to miss this pub every other Monday as my daughter, my brother and me go there for lunch food. Lovely.
- 4. “Staff so friendly and a nice atmosphere - such a shame.”
- 5. “We spent many happy hours in this pub, lovely staff and good food”
- 6. “Spent many a Saturday night in here in my late teens.
- “Pineapple Bacardi Breezer and a burger!”
- 7. “Went in there the day it opened, was lovely.”
- 8. “Oh no! I have made some great memories in this place.”
- 9. “Will miss this pub, the nearest Wetherspoon pub to me and now I only use Wetherspoon pubs or stay at home and drink - other pubs are too expensive.
- 10. “What shame, it’s one of the few I felt comfortable in.”
The Wetherspoons chain, founded by businessman Tim Martin, operates around 800 pubs around the UK and Ireland.
The closed pubs are currently being marketed by CBRE and Savills, according to The Caterer.
Senior director at CBRE, Toby Hall, said the pubs represent an "excellent" opportunity for existing pub operators.
He adds that there are a mix of locations in the portfolio which is rarely seen in the market.
