After opening their first UK outlet in Bromley back in February, renowned seafood restaurant chain of South African origin Ocean Basket has finally opened their much anticipated outlet in Kingston Upon Thames. As the UK has the highest total of South African immigrants in the world, it comes to no surprise that many residents are ecstatic to have an Ocean Basket opening on their doorsteps.

Growing up in Cape Town, South Africa, I can confidently state that Ocean Basket reigns high amongst the likes of KFC, Spur and Debonaires, providing a reliable and dominant presence in most food courts, of which South Africa’s sprawling shopping malls have many. Being an indisputable household name, countless South African immigrants who now reside in the UK are sure to have memories of the distinct, bustling atmosphere one could always find in an Ocean Basket, along with the plentiful portions of Seafood and sharing platters the chain is known for.

The much-loved Mediterranean style seafood restaurant had humble beginnings in Pretoria, South Africa, being opened by two brothers: Fats and George Lazarides, in 1995. In the 27 years since, Ocean Basket has grown to a global chain, with 220 restaurants worldwide in countries including Cyprus, Mauritius, Malta, Kenya, and Dubai. Many residents of Bromley and now Kingston Upon Thames can excitedly add the UK to that list, as mothers flood to Facebook groups for South Africans in their areas to spread the good news.

Situated just off the highstreet at 52A High Street, Kingston Upon Thames, KT1 1HN, the new outlet sits overlooking the Thames, giving the ‘atmosphere [...] a special buzz’ according to one customer on Google Review, whilst another user claims that ‘the restaurant theme is done really well’. With an atmospheric setting upon the river, and reportedly ‘friendly service’ and ‘attentive staff’, my family, along with countless others, hope for nothing but success in Ocean Basket’s expansion into the UK. After all, there’s nothing quite like a taste of home.
