Roald Dahl once said; “If you are going to get anywhere in life you have to read a lot of books.” Simply following this statement can immensely improve your life.
Why are books important? Books can improve your mental health and wellbeing as they reduce your stress levels. Therefore, they help you to relax and boost your quality of life; reading before bed can even improve your sleep.
In addition to this, books are a great source of entertainment as opposed to binge watching Netflix or YouTube. They improve your comprehension skills and memory, which is very useful for one’s day-to-day life as it improves your productivity.
Many studies have suggested that reading for at least thirty minutes per day is sufficient to reap the benefits of books. Moreover, local libraries provide a wide range of books from fiction to non-fiction, comedy, romance and more! Therefore, sign up to a public library as it is free in England and Wales and immerse yourself into an imaginary world or learn more about a topic that interests you, as reading can shape your lifestyle for the better.
I have asked a few students what they have thought about books:
“Books are great for going into another world where basically anything is possible; books can immerse you so much that you get sucked into the story for hours, so they’re also a great way to pass time.”–Faisal
"For me personally, there's the creative freedom part of it, such as using your imagination-but also a variety of genres and a way of seeing through other people's eyes."–Anonymous
"I personally find that books help me to immerse myself in a reality different from my own. They also help me to experience the world in a way that is multidimensional, whether that be the discovery of different cultures or histories all of which can alter one's outlook on life."-Leah
"I like reading because it allows me to become aware of perspectives different from my own and allows me to not only learn from them but also learn about people and the world around us."-Tasfia
"I like reading because it transports me to a different world and allows me to escape from reality."-Zarrah
Thus books are a great form of escapism and benefit your mental health. So next time when you want to binge watch a series, visit a local library and borrow a book.
