A traveling theatre group offering “pay what you can” tickets is about to start its tour of A Christmas Carol across the country with its opening night in Hither Green.

The show will be at St Swithun’s Church on November 28, 2022 at 7pm.

Half Cut Theatre is a theatre company passionate about bringing the theatre experience to everyone, regardless of their budget, and uses a "pay what you can" initiative.

Attendees book a ticket paying nothing and then they can choose to pay what they can after the show on the night if they wish.

Cofounder of the company, Alex Wilson said: “We are all professional actors aspiring to bring the splendour of West-End theatre to everyone regardless of their circumstances.

"We set up in August 2020 when the pandemic was having massive impact on the theatre industry.

"It was set up by me, James Camp and George Readshaw to bring theatre to people who may not be able to access the theatre due to the cost.

"We began by packing up our van and putting on shows outside and bringing theatre into the heart of local communities.

"To date around 10,000 people have seen our shows from across the country, the reaction has been phenomenal."

The company is due to start its seventh tour performing to communities in churches, church halls and other communal spaces.

Since founding the company in 2020, the company has put on a range of classic titles including Much Ado About Nothing, The Canterbury Tales, Treasure Island, and now A Christmas Carol.

Its production of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol brings the classic story with a modern take.

The production casts a female Scrooge played by Rebeca Birch alongside a small cast of professional actors: Meghan Hodgson, Tom Briggs, and George Readshaw.

Alex said: “We have used St Swithun’s church to rehearse as our main hub since the beginning, we’re all originally from south east London and it’s become our spiritual home.

"So as a thank you we start there and invite locals as well as their friends and families to come and see the show.”

All the proceeds will go directly back to St Swithun’s Church.

Reverend Juliet Evans said: "It goes hand in hand with what we do and what we believe in as at St Swithun’s as a church, providing for the local community and creating a space for everyone to enjoy.

"We also do similar things where people can pay what they can, we offer art classes, fitness classes, cinema nights and we are soon to be offering an escape room experience.

"Any proceeds we get from the show will go directly back into funding those projects to help our community in these difficult times.

"We believe in creating spaces that everyone can enjoy, which is why this partnership is so important to us.”
