Have you ever felt too lazy to get up and go outside? Ever felt like doing everything from the comfort of your home? Want to sit on your sofa and have an unbelievable experience of meeting up with a friend in a completely different country? This is what many believe the metaverse will be like.
The metaverse is a virtually shared universe where anything that can happen in the real world could potentially happen in the virtual world too. This project is being made by the social giant Facebook but they have clarified that it "won't be built overnight by a single company.", therefore we know that there will be other companies helping to complete this project too. Facebook itself, now renamed as Meta, describes the metaverse as, 'the next evolution in social connection and the successor to the mobile internet.' on its website. Meta hopes for the metaverse to be a place where people can connect with each other, no matter where they are or how far they are from each other, by giving them an experience almost identical to the experience that they will get in reality but instead it will be virtually.
With VR becoming more and more advanced these days, the doubt about metaverse actually becoming a reality is starting to dissipate. Also, after the Covid- 19 outbreak, the average online usage has shooted up, especially due to many work places making work from home more common now. This really proves how our future lives may be lived digitally.
The metaverse is bascially like a very advanced version of Fornite, an online video game, but instead of it being just aimed towards gamers it will be for everyone. You would be able to shop, go to live concerts happening on the other side of the world, work at home but still feel like you are at your office with all your colleagues, study on your bed but still feel like you are in your classroom and much much more. Facebook believes that this project will take another 10- 15 years to finish.
The evolution of the metaverse is just at the beginning right now but maybe if this new 'universe' is possible, the future may be very different to our world now.
