A bar will be allowed to stay open after a man was stabbed to death outside the premises.

Givani Espuet, 21, from north London, was killed outside The Aura on Harrow Road in the early hours of October 30, after attending a friend’s birthday party.

Since the incident, the venue had been forced to limit its capacity from 220 to 150, close by midnight, only offer alcohol to customers eating a meal, and install a metal detector at the main entrance.

The fatal stabbing prompted Brent Council’s alcohol and entertainment licensing sub-committee to conduct a review of the venue, which fuelled speculation that it could be forced to shut down.

However, rather than revoke the licence, held by KN Bros, the sub-committee decided to make amendments to the existing agreement during the meeting on Wednesday, December 14.

The Aura will now be required to have three security staff, accredited by the Security Industry Authority (SIA) – the UK government’s industry regulator – on site between Sunday and Thursday from 9pm to close, and five SIA staff on Fridays and Saturdays until close.

It was agreed that the interim conditions implemented after the incident be removed, but the sub-committee expressed “concerns” about the appropriateness of 220 customers remaining in the premises after the garden at the rear of the building closes.

Therefore, the bar management team is required to provide a capacity report and plan to the council within 14 days, which outlines how it is to deal with the volume of customers.

Police were called to the scene at 1.50am on the night of the incident. Mr Espuet died from multiple stab wounds despite the emergency service’s best efforts to save him. Following his death, The Aura remained closed until November 10.

Six men have now been arrested and charged with murder, they are all due to appear at the Old Bailey on January 19.

The Aura was approached for comment.
