1 Studio Gauthier, Fitzrovia

One of London’s most luxuriant vegan chefs, Alexis Gauthier’s newest venture sees the French chef partner up with the BFI to create a plant-based restaurant that comes with a short, bistro-ish menu alongside a tasting menu that comes with optional wine pairings. While grounded in Alexis’ Cote D’Azur roots, Middle Eastern, Israeli, Mexican and Japanese influences are all there too. Housed in the BFI screening and office building just off Tottenham Court Road, the open plan dining room comes with a New York twang and comes with a sunny private terrace with a Stephen Mews backdrop. 2 Wonderland, Soho

Serving both vegan and meat-based menus, Wonderland is a bustling burger place, open for dining in and take away, from the sibling team behind Genesis, a vegan and plant-based restaurant now in Palmers Green (see below). The vegan options will steer clear of heavily processed meat-alternatives, while the meat patties are made from British and Irish farmers. Each burger – meaty or otherwise will be served in a pillowy, steamed bun.

3 Genesis, Palmers Green

A cheap and cheerful restaurant that started off life as a food truck and which serves a mix of dishes, which are all vegan. There’s curries and stews made with wholesome ingredients such as plantain, butter beans, kamut dumplings and root vegetables. You can also get stuck into spiced fries, kim chi fritters, mac n cheese and a selection of burgers and buddha burger bowls to try too.

4 EDIT, Hackney

A newcomer for 2023, EDIT is a well-considered and carefully measured vegan restaurant offering up small plates or a tasting menu if you want to sample almost everything on the menu, and you really do want to. Delicate yet satiating veg-forward dishes are paeans to the deliciousness of nature, wines come organic, low intervention and on tap and cocktails come embellished by someone's whimsical herb garden. Recycled materials make up the interiors and left over pieces produce from one dish are turned into ingredients and additives for another.

5 Gauthier Soho, Soho

French chef Alexis Gauthier closed Gauthier Soho just to reopen it in 2021 as a fully plant-based restaurant, cementing himself as one of London’s best vegan chefs. Using classical French techniques, Gauthier creates a fully plant-based fine-dining set menu that runs across either five or eight courses. With two sittings a night Tuesday to Saturday, with an additional Saturday lunch sitting, guests can feast on the likes of leek terrine with plant caviar, tomato ravioli and kalamata olive cheesecake.

6 Wulf & Lamb, Chelsea & Marylebone

With an entirely plant-based menu, the food is created to "satisfy your craving for comfort food by creating vegan versions of familiar classics". Wulf & Lamb is known for its indulgent Mac’N’Cheese and burgers but also offers healthy options too. Find the restuarant in Chelsea and Marylebone.

7 Tendril, Mayfair

The fully vegan restaurant is on a "mission to showcase what’s possible in plant-first food". With seasonal menus, Tendril serves relaxed, eclectic, feel-good food using top-of-a-range quality produce. After a successful residencty at The Sun & 13 Cantons in Soho, Tendril has now found a home just off Regent Street.

8 Mildreds, London-wide

Mildreds is 100 per cent plant-based and invites people to try "internationally inspired colourful food". Since first opening in 1988, the restaurant has grown to have five locations dotted around London, that are always pretty full.

9 mallow, Borough & Canary Wharf

10 Spice Box, Walthamstow

This modern curry house describes itself as having "fresh spins on curry house classics which happen to be vegan", and has long been a favourite spot with Walthamstow locals. Visitors have described the food as "super tasty" and "well-spiced".

12 Jam Delish, Islington

The new Islington restaurant started off life as a pandemic-born small business before opening in Angel this year. Dishes are vegan riffs on Carribean family recipies - 'fish' tacos, 'goat' curry and jerk 'chicken' wings are all made with protein substitutes, and the cocktails come boozy.
