The spectacular performance of Othello in The National Theatre displays the in-depth character of its protagonist Othello by displaying whip marks on his back as a tribute to his past as a slave.
This new approach to his character brings a revitalising change in the Othello productions, especially as some of the past adaptations had not paid much attention to the disposition of its black character due to discriminatory views and often had white male actors play on stage with theatrical makeup to appear as native African. This not only diminishes any insight the author may have wanted to show through the tragedy but may even rended the main character as mere comic relief despite his insighful writing.
This is why Clint Dyer's interpretation allows the audience to witness the peculiarity that lays on Othello beyong his exterior. He is an incredibly complex character with his feeling become more entangled once he is torn between trusting the sincerity of the love of his life,Desdemona,or that of his"kind-hearted" friend Iago;his indecisiveness resulting in a tragedy that slowly drives him insane and brings death uppon those dear to him.
Therefore, this different approach to portraying Othello explores many insightful themes such as appereance versus reality theme as the constant duality of the machiavelian villain Iago is seen throughout the play as he dons a genuine and unharmful mask infront of Othello while conspiring behind his back making this year's National Theatre Production a thrilling watch.
