With the growing popularity of television, video games and social media; reading is often forgotten about. However, reading is often the solution to problem after problem, with decades of research to back this. Reading is constantly recommended; throughout education and adult life, so why is this advice often ignored?
The benefits of reading range from finding a new hobby to protecting the brain from Alzheimer’s. The hidden health benefits from reading are astounding. Reading is a huge stimulant for the brain which is found to delay the onset of dementia as the brain is kept active. As dementia affects so many, this is an easy and accessible way to keep your brain stimulated.
Reading doesn’t only contain benefits for physical health but also mental. Acting as a huge stress reliever, reading can be seen as an escape from the anxieties of every day life. If meditation has never worked for you, half an hour with a book might be just what you need. Reading for enjoyment gives a feeling of self-accomplishment and has been seen to increase self-esteem.
Sitting down anywhere with a book, whether it is in a warm, cosy bed or waiting for the bus, immerses you in a whole other world you weren’t aware of. Sometimes all we need is ten minutes to escape from reality. The community reading gives you is like no other; book groups and online discussions can lead to new friendships and hobbies.
Teachers do not recommend reading for no reason, it is a simple and enjoyable way to increase your knowledge and achieve better grades. Mrs Smith, a prior headteacher, thinks that ‘reading is the best way for a person of any age to widen their horizons and open up their brain to something new’. Even if you are only learning about a new realm of fiction, you are still learning. With many opportunities to learn out there, why not use them?
With reading being so accessible and with endless benefits, it really can be seen as the best medicine. Instead of watching half an hour of Netflix tonight, find a seat and read ten pages; you will not regret it.
