The UK Hip Hop scene is thriving. Every concert filled with talent. Rappers of old and new. The UK Hip Hop scene is coming alive once again.
February 2023, we joined fans at the Flava of The Month concert, celebrating 50 years of hip hop at Islington’s 02 academy. While the venue was small in the size the love and passion for the night could be felt through the rooftops. The scene was clear, people dancing, smiling, talking to anyone who passed by while simultaneously rapping along. This was a concert that was more than just music it was about the message, the party, the coming together of a community that historically started behind in life. For what seemed like underground scene, it is clearly on the rise and the sold-out event could easily push to bigger venues.
While the legendary Rodney P took the venue by storm with his headline set and finished by pouring a bottle of rum into the mouths of the audience. It was the artist Blade who put his mark on the hip hop scene, he attempted to inspired people to share the message and really grow the scene back to the old roots. Blade later brought out with him the last remaining member of the group Hardnoise, AJ. The inspiration came first hand when Blade discussed how he supported the scene as he stated “I put my last bit of money into Hardnoise, to get them in the studio”. While it was our first hip hop event, it certainly won’t be our last. Leaving the venue with a new found interest in hip hop and a message from Blade – Grow the hip hop scene but most importantly support talent in all walks of life.
