On March 13, the Biden administration approved the controversial Willow Project in Alaska. The Willow project is an oil drilling project on Alaska’s north barrel. It plans to produce up to 600 million barrels of oil which would release around 227 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, leading to it claiming the name of ‘Carbon bomb’. Now that the Biden administration has given the Willow project the green light, construction can begin. The Willow project is harnessing support from officials because ‘the state’s lawmakers say the project will create jobs, boost domestic energy production, and lessen the country’s reliance on foreign oil.’ During Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign, he ‘vowed to end new oil and gas drilling on public lands and waters’ which is clearly contradicted by the approval of this project.
If carried out, the Willow project will destroy wildlife, habitats, and entire ecosystems creating a detrimental and irreversible effect on climate change therefore it must be stopped for the hope for future generations and those like me growing up into this world which is consistently being harmed and destroyed by those who will not even be there to see it crumble due to their choices and decisions. Although conditions are becoming rapidly worse and concerns are increasing, there is still time and opportunity. President Biden’s first term reaches a conclusion next year; there is opportunity for a new leader of the United States who puts the future of our world first and understand the importance of creating no further damage. I urge you to not stop talking and sharing this crisis. Publicity and revolt are the greatest things we can do to protect our world and prevent so much destruction.
