A Lewisham food bank says the cost of living crisis means their donations are at an all-time low and they cannot support those in need.

On Monday 27 March, volunteer Chris Margaritis reported that the Lewisham food bank was suffering from a severe lack of goods.

The organisation relies on cash and physical food donations so that they can organise and pass these on to people in need, providing locals with food and general essentials, who cannot afford it.

Chris said on social media: “Our foodbank is running out of everyday items!

"Oh, horror!

“In the ten years I’ve been there I’ve never, ever, seen short supplies of beans or soups.”

He added that he would be grateful for any donations.

The Lewisham foodbank then reposted this and said: “We’ve never known times like this before. It’s very very sad, and troubling, please help if you can.”

Chris replied to this with: “Yes, sadly it was true on Monday. We felt like crying …”

The food bank has since thanked the general public for what they called an “INCREDIBLE response” to their appeal.

You can follow The Lewisham Food Bank on Facebook and watch their #ThisWeekWeNeed campaign to stay in the loop about the specifics in demand any given week.

This week they’re looking for plastic bags, shower gel, biscuits, nappies, cereal rice, period pads, beans and cooking oil.

They urged followers to support their local food banks too, stating this is not a Lewisham-specific issue.

The food bank has urged anyone local to donate if they can at the Lewisham Foodbank, Hope Centre, 118 Malham Rd, SE23 1AN between 9 am and 4 pm from Monday to Thursday.

They said supermarket deliveries to them and cash donations are also welcome and these can be made online.
