The Lion King musical has been performed at the Lyceum Theatre for over 17 years, with endless brilliant reviews and appraisals.
A childhood classic, and my personal favourite animated movie, expectations were deservedly high. On entrance into the Lyceum, staff kindly greeted us and showed the way forward, where we found our seats and waited for the show to start.
The performance opened with a famous rendition of ‘The Circle of Life’, with huge praises awarded to Rafiki for her singing! Once the musical got into full swing, it was amazing how clearly the production encapsulated the vivid emotions of the most important scenes.
To begin, the scene between Mufasa revealing the ‘Kings’ as Stars above following near death from Hyena’s perfectly depicted the fear, anger but also endless care that Mufasa held for his son. Similarly, during Mufasa’s death scene, the superb use of lighting and music captured the tension and sadness of the moment.
However, my favourite scene throughout was Simba seeing his father in the pond. In an incredible use of props, the musical managed to create a huge lion face behind Simba, portraying Mufasa. Summarising the importance of the moment perfectly, the delivering of lines, along with Hans Zimmer’s music made for a beautiful scene.
The Lion King has a close place in many people’s hearts, and if it does so in someone’s that has never been to the Lyceum, they should visit soon!
