A man who is alleged to have escaped from custody has been found by police and arrested in Brixton.

Police say that on May 26, Kwami Richards escaped from a prison transport van outside Brixton Police Station.

He was “being transported to prison by a private security company when the incident occurred”.

The 42-year-old had links to Wandsworth and was wanted on recall to prison for breaching his licence conditions after serving a sentence for burglary.

Richards has now been arrested and taken into custody. He was chased by a police officer into Brixton Underground Station, and the officer was allegedly assaulted as he attempted to detain Richards, who then boarded a train on the Victoria Line.

Met Police were advising the public not to approach Richards and to call 999 immediately if seen.

He was found by police on the morning of May 31 in the Brixton area.

Police have thanked the public for their help with the appeal.

A spokesperson for Metropolitan Police said: “Police appealed for information to locate Kwami Richards, 42, who had escaped from custody in Lambeth on Friday, 26 May.

“He was in the process of being transported to prison by a private security company when he escaped.

“Richards was located by officers on the morning of Wednesday, 31 May in the Brixton area – he has been arrested and taken into police custody.

“We thank the public and the media for their assistance in publicising this appeal.”
