North London welcomed another Michelin recommendation when a Japanese restaurant in Marylebone was added to the Guide this month.

The Chiltern Street offshoot of Beirut omakase restaurant Mayha opened its doors in December and has been added to the guide for its “real sense of style”, “highly seasonal omakase menu” and the “sense of theatre” which threads the procession of dishes together.

The Michelin Guide also highlighted that the kitchen champions “luxury” ingredients and makes them the heroes of each dish.

As an omakase restaurant, head chefs Jurek Wasio and Yuchi Nakaya (who relocated from the Lebanon restaurant to launch the London venue) decide what dishes are plated up as part of the tasting menu that changes daily and which is rooted in technique and use the best produce of the season.

A menu exceptional sakes, rare spirits, fine wines and niche beers accompanies the food.

The “chic” interiors are centred around an intimate curved stone counter that seats just 11 people and is lit up by a custom-made light installation created by Lebanese design house spockdesign using traditional Japanese methods.

The restaurant holds two dinner sittings Tuesday to Saturday as well as an omakase lunch menu too, and walk-ins are welcome for this.

Dinner without drinks will set you back £180, or £220 for the “premium experience”. Vegetarians can be catered for with 48 hours’ notice.

Mayha also opened The Bar Downstairs in March, which is an intimate drinking den seating up to six people at a time.

It serves a truncated version of the omakase menu served in the restaurant above, which is five courses of largely raw dishes which have been paired with five signature cocktails designed by the restaurant’s head of drinks.

There’s also a compact a la carte menu to try out here too, featuring dishes such as panettone sando, octopus with yuzu apple and stone bass with nori zaatar.
