The blaze took crews from Shadwell, Whitechapel, Bethnal Green, Dowgate and Dockhead fire stations just over an hour to extinguish.
The incident was over for firefighters at around 8.10pm and the cause of the fire is now under investigation.
Speaking yesterday, Station Commander Andy McKay said: "Firefighters worked quickly to bring the fire under control.
"West Ferry Road remains closed between Byng Street and Marsh Wall whilst crews make the scene safe. This is causing heavy traffic, so we're urging people to avoid the local area.
"Our Control Officers gave vital fire survival guidance to those inside the building on how to stay safe whilst firefighters brought the fire under control. There are currently no reports of any injuries."
