Neil Warnock has targeted a striker as his next signing with news that Clinton Morrison is unlikely to return to Selhurst Park.

Crystal Palace's top scorer last season with 16 goals has failed to agree a new contract with the club and the offer of a new two-year deal expired last Monday.

He failed to report for pre-season training on Wednesday, although he was under no obligation to, and has been linked with a move Queens' Park Rangers to link up with former Palace manager Iain Dowie.

Morrison decision to depart his boyhood club for the second time leaves Warnock with only 32-year-old James Scowcroft, veteran Dougie Freedman and out of favour Shefki Kuqi as experienced forwards on his books, and he recognises he needs to strengthen.

"We have got to get one or two others in as we are a bit thin," he said.

He has been strongly linked with moves for Hearts frontman Christian Nade and this week was rumoured to be interested in Charlton Athletic's Chris Iwelumo, their top scorer last season.

However, he didn't rule out the prospect of Morrison returning should he not agree terms with another club.

He said: "He has not been training and his contract ended last week. The offer ran out last Monday and we are talking to his agent but I think they are talking to two or three other clubs at the minute."

Morrison will end his Palace career level with Mark Bright as the club's fourth top goalscorer of all time, with 113 strikes in 316 appearances.
