Police have issued an update after a man was found dead in his home after a fire in Hither Green.

Emergency services were called to Leahurst Road at around 3am this morning (Thursday, October 12).

A man in his 70s was found dead at the scene.

A woman in her 60s was taken to hospital where her condition is not being treated as life-threatening.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “Police were called at 03:03hrs on Thursday, 12 October to reports of a fire at a residential address in Leahurst Road SE13.

“Officers responded with the LAS and LFB.

“Sadly a man aged in his 70s was found deceased.

“A woman aged in her 60s was taken to hospital; her condition is not being treated as life-threatening.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 3am today (Thursday 12) to reports of a fire in Leahurst Road, SE13.

“We sent a number of resources including two ambulance crews, an incident response officer and members of our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART).

"We also dispatched London’s air ambulance.

“Sadly, a man was pronounced dead at the scene. We treated a woman and took her to hospital.”

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: “Sadly, a man has died following a house fire on Leahurst Road in Hither Green in the early hours of this morning.

“Half of the first floor of a mid-terraced house was damaged by fire. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus brought a man out of the building via an internal staircase. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“A woman left the building before the Brigade arrived and was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews.

“The Brigade was called at 0259 and the incident was over for firefighters by 0444.

"Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Lewisham, Lee Green, Greenwich and East Greenwich fire stations attended the scene.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
